    United States beats the Netherlands 2-0 to win its fourth Women's World Cup title
    34 mins ago

    LYON, France (AP) -- The United States won its record fourth Women's World Cup title and second in a row, beating the Netherlands 2-0 Sunday night when Megan Rapinoe converted a penalty kick in the second half and Rose Lavelle added a goal.

    Rapinoe, the pink-haired U.S. captain who grabbed world-wide attention on and off the field, scored in the 61st minute after a video review determined Stefanie van der Gragt had fouled Alex Morgan with a kick to the shoulder in the penalty area.

    Two days past her 34th birthday, Rapinoe slotted the ball past goalkeeper Sari van Veenendaal for her 50th international goal, her sixth of the tournament to win the Golden Ball as scoring leader. The oldest player to score in a Women's World Cup final, she struck a familiar victorious pose with arms outstretched.

    Lavelle, at 24 the team's up-and-coming star, added a goal on an 18-foot left-footed shot in the 69th after a solo run up the center of the field.

    Fans, many dressed in red, white and blue, chanted "Equal Pay!" at the final whistle, a reminder players sued the U.S. Soccer Federation in March claiming gender discrimination.

    Rapinoe drew the ire of U.S. President Donald Trump during the tournament by saying she and teammates would refuse to visit the White House, part of the team's wider push for gender equity. New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio needed just a few seconds after the final whistle to invite the team to a ticker-tape parade up the Canyon on Heroes in Manhattan on Wednesday. ( Asshole )

    The Americans never trailed in the tournament and set records with 26 goals and a 12-game World Cup winning streak dating to 2015. U.S. coach Jill Ellis became the first coach to lead a team to two Women's World Cup titles, and the U.S. joined Germany in 2003 and 2007 as the only repeat champions.

    With confidence and brashness that some called even arrogant -- triggering a backlash that the angry response was sexist -- this American team established a standard of excellence that will be a goal for other U.S. teams and the rest of the world to match. Former American players joined the current generation on the field for the postgame celebration.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Congrats to the United States WWC Champions !!
    I try to look at the bright side of everything.
    Soccer isn't so big in the USA as everywhere else.
    The rest of the world is so hating us like when Hitler's '36 Olympics was meant to prove their racial superiority and they got totally stomped on.
    Kudos to the manly lesbians for going above and beyond to put the USA at the top.:smilie flag:
    Don't care what color you are or what you eat for breakfast, you did good with USA on your jerseys.
    I played soccer for 8 years...from age 10 in '64 through age 18 in '72... in the Mayfair section of NE Philly...and both my coaches had a straight off the boat Irish brogue. I can still hear them yellin'...
    We played teams who had a soccer ball placed in their crib growing up...teams named the German Hungarians, Lighthouse Field, the Mayfair Shamrocks...as well as Catholic high school teams when I played for Father Judge.
    And all those sandlot and high school teams still exist to this day...
    So, don't tell me soccer isn't big in the United States.
    Hell...the kids now days travel the all over the state and win championship cups.
    We got a pat on the back and maybe a pizza party on the field after the championship game...one slice each.
    :rolleyes:
    Ummm, I kinda agree with Supp on this one. My family and I are big sports fans. I've always been into sports all of my life, and played high school and college basketball (a lot on the bench). Even played well after my collegiate years in the Coast Guard and Police leagues, as well as some coaching with my son's teams.
    I don't think soccer is as big here in the states as the other major sports, (football, baseball, basketball & hockey) are. No doubt, it's quickly getting there, more and more each year.
    My brother and sister were big soccer players, even going to soccer camps overseas as high school students , in Portugal and Brasil, where soccer is huge!
    With the US winning world titles, there's no doubt, soccer is taking off to the point wherein it's increasing in popularity, as more and more people are watching it and the stadiums start to fill up more and more! Heck, even the networks are carrying more and more games on television.
    Here in the Delaware Valley, the Pro soccer team the "Philadelphia Union" does not have the stadium draw as do the other four major sports teams! That no doubt is rapidly changing!
    PS: I must admit, I don't even know all the rules of soccer as a competitive sport!:eek:
    Well then...I guess we will agree to disagree.
    Soccer was and still is big in Philadelphia...played both in sandlot playground teams and at the high school and even college levels.
    And with all the illegal immigrants flooding this country...it won't be long before it's the national sport...with Spanish as the official language...
    Se Habla Espanol...!?
    Bueno, lo hago... y será mejor que lo aprendas a...
    I can certainly agree with you on that one buddy! I was just making a comparison to the other major sports here, that's all.
    No way this old conservative will complement a team with men trapped in a women's bodies regardless of the sport. JMFO. Football not soccer has been the prominent sport for over a hundred years here in the South.
    The only other sport overall that compares is "RUGBY", now that's a man's game.
    As of five years ago these are the stats for youth sports in the USA If anyone can find a newer one post it.
